Kuala Lumpur, 22 April 2015 – Transparency International, the leading civil society organisation fighting corruption worldwide, will release a new report on why ASEAN leaders must create a regional body – the ASEAN Integrity Community — that integrates anti-corruption principles into the framework of a proposed regional economic community.
The new report will analyse specific corruption risks ASEAN is facing and provide concrete proposals for increased future cooperation through the ASEAN Integrity Community.
Despite claims to the contrary, corruption is not under control. In Malaysia, where ASEAN is meeting this week, and across the region Transparency International is calling for a more aggressive approach.
Recent reports that Transparency International believes corruption is under control in the region, specifically Malaysia, are not correct.
Malaysia scored 52 out of 100 in the 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index, indicating that corruption is pervasive and needs to be tackled aggressively. TI Malaysia considers it important for the government to continue the fight against corruption in all sectors of society. The corruption risks in the region will be discussed at the Friday report launch event in Kuala Lumpur.
